Business Strategist is a term that most people use, especially online.
What does a business strategist do? Is it worth hiring one or is it just a waste of money and time? What makes a strategist good?
Usually, a strategist takes care of the following:
- Creates the plan to get you from where you are to where you want to be
- Analyses your problems and find solutions for them
- Comes up with ideas to improve your current business situation
- Gives you a step by step guideline and shows you exactly what you need to do and when
- Looks for opportunities in your market and helps you make use of them
- Provides critical feedback
- Keeps you on track and makes sure you are laser-focused on what you have to do
Unfortunately, these days almost anyone can say that he or she is a business strategist. So, it’s essential for you to see the difference between someone who is faking and someone who is not. Pay attention to their education, training, and experience.
While education is super valuable and vital, I don’t think it is the most significant way of analyzing the potential and the skills of someone. So just because a strategist doesn’t have formal education, I wouldn’t qualify that as a reason not to work with them.
Even if they do or don’t have a formal education, what’s a thousand times more important than that is their effort in learning from the best in the industry. What kind of training have they gone through to learn the skills they need to work as a business strategist.
Do they have several courses and programs in their portfolio? Certifications from business strategists that are experts in the field. Or, they might have only a few diplomas they got from sites like udemy or Lynda, and that’s not something that represents quality training for a strategist. Working with someone who is certified is incredible, because you know they have been through training, and have been supervised while doing practical work so that they have experience.
To me, the experience is the most important factor in qualifying someone as a strategist. Have they created a successful business in the past? Or have they helped others create successful businesses? Is their current business successful? Look at their website, look at their testimonials, and case studies, and reach out to their clients to ask how their experience was!
Now, let’s take a look at a few traits a great business strategist should have:
1. Positive and Confident
Business strategists work under a lot of pressure because they are responsible for giving life to mere thought. A confident person will always look for positive outcomes. Hence, they will confidently create practical strategies. Confident strategists can give self-assurance and encourage colleagues who implement their plans. This practice boosts morals and enables the workforce to work with complete dedication.
A great strategist is always competitive. A lot of programs fail in the business world because they neglect to examine their competitors and their strategies. Without knowing what others are doing and how their actions will backfire, an approach will fail even if it looks promising. This is why a successful strategist competitively examines every aspect before making a decision.
Success is achieved by those who are intelligent. If a person’s approach is not pragmatic, he will undoubtedly have trouble achieving success. A successful strategist acknowledges the challenges that lie ahead and proposes a viable plan instead of ignoring them and suggesting something unrealistic.
4. Critical Thinker
Successful strategists can look forward by examining what they can do and what has been done so far to determine the outcome of a strategy. A strategist always plans for the future. Thus, a person who can think critically and determine the best course of action can certainly help a business flourish and achieve success.
A strategist can’t remain successful for long without showing honesty and care. Avoiding any unethical practices and sticking to ethical and approved practices will enable the strategist to execute a plan without facing any restrictions from anyone. The team working on it will accept it wholeheartedly and do their best to achieve the best possible results.
6. Great Communication Skills
If a strategist fails to deliver his plan to his team, then he will never produce the desired results. The team needs to understand exactly how everything is and what sort of outcome to expect. Without proper communication, whether it’s done through email, voice chat, video conferencing or any other mean, a plan will not yield satisfactory results. If there is confusion, employees will interpret everything to the best of their abilities. If it happens, then it will cause more damage than good. Poor communication will slow down the process. This is why a successful strategist is capable of communicating his ideas in a clear and concise manner.
A strategist is, in fact, a great leader who trains and manages a team of skilled employees. Without excellent leadership qualities, it will be impossible for the strategist to keep the team focused until the project complete.
It takes time to become a successful strategist. You must learn from your mistakes and always strive to create viable plans with complete dedication and honesty. Guide your team thoroughly and ensure that your message gets across without any confusion at all. Only then you will be able to take a business to the next level.
